My latest creative endeavors… A lumpy version of planned pooling

Did you celebrate May is Mental Health month?

I’m happy to say, that even though I didn’t plan to celebrate this annual event, my friend Pam and I had a happy accident while looking for a park to hang out and picnic. My own local Fox Hills Park was having a Take Action Mental Health related event while we were enjoying the sun and picnic tables there. I am always happy to be with Pam, and the fact that we stumbled into another mental health event feels perfectly serendipitous since we know each other from this particular field of work.

Some of the more interesting moments of this encounter was witnessing an extra large tent fly up up and away because of strong winds, luckily never hitting anyone in the process. We saw children and an adult-sized person being tumbled into a sheet and carried up up and down, just having fun. We heard live drumming and singing. We watched as a literal clown (reminiscent of “In living color’s” Homey the clown) entertained many children juggling while propped high above their heads. It was memorable and lovely to be there with them.

Favorite Things I’ve been enjoying lately

This list represents a few new things I’ve encountered and didn’t know about last month.

  • A Wisp of Sunshine” is a business by local Artist/Mom that offers a monthly mail club style handmade publication to help you reconnect you to your best self. Very therapeutic and worth it.

  • For you fans of John Oliver and “Last Week Tonight”, I’m looking forward to receiving a poster of him from a real artist in Ghana, with his charity to support this rediscovered art form. It also provides a link to donate directly instead of the purchase.

  • There’s a new grocery store around the corner that is where Big Lots used at 5587 Sepulveda Blvd in Culver City called Super King which is full of international foods, some at great bargain prices.

If you have new things to share that I should be aware of I would love
to hear about it!

This is Purslane, as kept in a forever jar from “A Wisp of Sunshine” to help me remember what this is and where I found it (Super King).

Shyness and all its portrayals in Film & beyond

I’m an introvert. Here is a list of the films that I feel portray this feeling of being inside my mind more than being out in the world.

  • DTF St. Louis

  • Lars and the Real Girl

  • Donnie Darko

  • Amelie

  • Marcel the Shell

  • Mandibles

These are the ones I’ve seen so far but I think there’s something worth examining in each of them. I would say these are “must watch” movies for introverts like me.

  • Most of these share a journey in being depressed, alone, or dismissed by most “normal” people.

  • Each film has a very unusual character that we can almost immediately relate to once we see their experiences.

  • There is love for the underdog because they can affect everyone around them in a positive way.

Here are some films that I’ve heard hit these marks that I haven’t seen yet:

  • The Station Agent

  • Romantics Anonymous

  • Eighth grade

  • The Perks of being a Wallflower

  • A silent Voice

  • Silver Linings Playbook

  • Her

If you have seen these and can recommend or comment on any of these as “must watch” please let me know. I’m the type of person to let most shows run in the background while I second screen just to help me understand what I’m getting myself into. But if someone tells me that a film is really worth it, I’ll pay attention. Thanks in advance.

an easy way to make a zine

So you have a friend that you want to commemorate with some kind of collaboration. Why not create a zine out of your conversations with each other?

With my BF’s friends, we have a shared place for our conversational piques for interest called “The book of loneliness”. We keep all the things that make us laugh in there.

I think of a zine not as just a place for comedy, but just everything that works in your life as a kind of testament to the creative and beautiful things that you want to share with others. The nice thing about a zine is that it’s very personal, and we are not actually creating it to make a buck. It’s art for art’s sake, and it’s usually something no one else has seen before.

Drawings don’t have to be perfect or make sense. You could trace photographs, or be minimalist with scribbles. Or you can copy lyrics to a favorite song to give people an earworm to hang onto. We all want to share a vibe, and I hope that you’re enjoying it.

What am I working on lately?
