Creative Hump, Takes a Dark Turn
How a traveling cat built a thriving career while exploring the world without anyone else
Hello again and nevermoreChicken Cat, Remote Detective, & Travel Ace Chicken is a cat who has gotten stuck between worlds one day in order to explore the world with her curiosity. After years in a traditional home with someone who she snuggled nightly, she realized she didn’t have to choose between her person and adventure—she could have both. Today, she finds herself looking for birds, work-life balance, and building a sustainable lifestyle in heaven. | ![]() Chicken has been gone since |
Hey there!
Last month’s EventBrite online meeting was botched when news about this lost cat came about on the same day as the event. Every time a member of the family goes missing, especially the small defenseless furry kind — it causes me to quietly, unintentionally, yet determinedly get off the beaten path. Let’s dive in and talk about my next meeting.

Creative Hump online for creatives
Being someone who likes to prepare for my events, I created an “instructable” which would help describe for members what my last year’s holiday card looked like and how it was printed. Little did I know, it would be successfully promoted by instructables editors as a featured project. In their words, “Being featured means we think you are awesome.”
I hope you have a look at my Instructable, and feel free to ask me more about any step of it, especially if it’s something you think you want to try yourself. Here’s the link 🚀

What inspired you to adopt Chicken while traveling?
Interestingly, I’m currently traveling, and while she left us, I’ve been living in the same place that Chicken came from, near Erie, PA. I was inspired by my friend who decided it was time for us to visit a Cat Cafe that it was time to adopt a new cat. Now that Chicken is also traveling indefinitely, I can only wish her well and hope she wants to find me again in the happily ever after.
“That’s the great secret of creativity.
You treat ideas like cats:
you make them follow you.”
What challenges do we face when transitioning to remote work while traveling?
I see my life as a series of stories that are loosely strung together by small pins, wins, and memorable moments that make more sense to me either because I worked for them or because I wanted them to happen. It’s the trauma, the accidents, the things that don’t make sense that threaten to challenge my memory and my sanity to the point where I suspect I will fall victim to one of the many problems of being a senior with my usual senior moments.
Similarly I find that the largest challenge of working away from home to be a new world fraught with so many relationships that feel accidental. I try to make more of it by learning as much as I can about who I am working for. While they may have not hired me to befriend me, I still want to help people who have found me because they wanted to work with me specifically and for good, healthy, & honorable reasons.
Still it’s always best to have healthy boundaries, and I do understand that my clients are not necessarily my friends. What I look for is trust and agreement from both of us in what each of us is willing and capable of doing and why. In an age where a text from an 825 area code is likely to be various scams, including robocalls, neighbor spoofing, and utility scams, I find myself (as a young senior) needing to use my gut when answering calls from new people.
Perhaps it is because cats do not live by human patterns, do not fit themselves into prescribed behavior, that they are so united to creative people.

What is the meaning of “Hump” with Creative Hump?
I like the idea of creativity coming from your own challenges. We all have obstacles to overcome, and for me, some of those are my internal issues as well. I hope that the work that I do helps you see what you might also be capable of no matter what your circumstances. Creativity isn’t necessarily the end product; it may also be the way to move beyond conflicts.
I had been told that the training procedure with cats was difficult. It’s not. Mine had me trained in two days.
What are you looking forward to in October with or without Chicken?
I’m going to start creating a walking routine complete with some cat pics along the way. Hopefully, I will find a few regulars that want to befriend me, without getting too attached.
Meanwhile, my partner and I will be at a few pre-planned events, including the Magic Castle and a performance with Chris Turner. I’m also going to try a little harder at making a memorable yet comfortable Halloween costume this year. Maybe we’ll even do some much needed bi-coastal couples therapy.
And of course, I’m looking forward to this upcoming webinar event where I will get a chance to meet a few new faces and help create some helpful ideas for holiday cards.
Cats will amusingly tolerate humans only until someone comes up with a tin opener that can be operated with a paw.

This clock is able to show the time in any direction.
I came up with this idea when I realized how specifically each of our time zones (Paris, LA, NY) seemed to be interlinked at right angles.
I hope all of you find yourself exactly where you need to be when you want to be there.
